Guided Aquatic Science

Field experiences make learning about aquatic science come alive and give students a hands-on event to which they can connect their learning which greatly enhances knowledge retention. We offer six activities to which people may participate in. Each class lasts approximately 1 hour. Suggested Donation is $15 per person. 1. Water Quality-Introduce students to a local creek and pond by using water chemistry testing. 2. Land Use in Our Watershed-Ask students to explore using a habitat assessment to examine where water flows, infiltrates, or accumulates and how land use influences the quality of water in their watershed. 3. Assess Stream Health with Invertebrate Sampling- Have students conduct a field investigation to analyze and identify macroinvertebrates a bioindicators in a local body of water. 4. Field Trip to a Wetland-Includes a field trip to a local wetland to look at the unique characteristics of these aquatic ecosystems from soil, to plants, to wildlife species. 5. Fish Sampling and Ecosystem Assessment-Helps students learn and practice fishing techniques while they examine multiple criteria for evaluating a local aquatic ecosystem. 6. Habitat Stewardship-Students will learn first-hand how our natural resources are vital to our quality of life. Students will learn how they can help to contribute to having clean air, clean water, active plants, and healthy wildlife populations, as well as their impact on stability and rich biodiversity of the entire region.
